Winter 21/22 Trend Guide

Without a doubt, 20/21 fashion has been evolutionary and refreshing. Most of 2020 trends were quite nostalgic, but a lot of the Y2K, 2000’s patterns and accessories ended up being fads and have ended their cycle already. The beaded phone charms, psychedelic prints, and bold colors had a huge surge of popularity throughout last year, but most of these trends have died off and wont be returning for this winter and next year’s fashion. However, this doesn’t mean some 2000’s styles, cuts, and materials won’t become classic styles in the industry’s future. Today, I will be showing you some of this upcoming winter’s trends, what I think about them, and how they came to be.

après ski

This winter trend highlights the relationship between athleisure style and winter wear. Après ski is all about the before, during, and after of ski activities; so, this basically means oversized puffer coats, thick pants, patterned knits, big padded ski shoes, and even ski style glasses. What comes to my mind when I think about this trend is the Mui Mui F/W 21 fashion show. This show brought all of the après skiwear with the puffer coats, balaclavas, and puffer patterns. The wavy printed puffers are one of the trends that stuck and have been seen all over mainstream shopping sites like ASOS and Zara.

balaclavas

The balaclavas are not new to fashion and have been sent down numerous runways since 2018 by designers like Gucci, Calvin Klein, and as of recently, Celine’s F/W21 menswear shows. This trend stems from the après skiwear category due to its ski-mask chic vibe. If this isn’t for you, there are multiple variations of this hat like hooded sweaters.

printed & colorful knits

One thing that will be carried into this winter and next year’s fashion is unique prints. Prints, much like this checkered knitwear above, have been seen all over from several brands since its popularity began in 2020. These prints and patterns will continue their cycle into the new year and we may see them on more sweaters and knits this cold weather season. We also see bright colorful knits this winter in addition to patterns. All types of knits, whether it be chunky, crochet, or mohair knitwear, we will see these bright colors from head to toe!

mohair knit

Mohair is known for its sheen and hair-like material. Usually it is seen in fiber blends in which the knits will have an added soft and fluffy appearance and texture. On its own, it is very sheer and will mostly be used for layering this winter. However, mohair blended fabrics will also be seen on their own as sweaters, cardigans, scarfs, and other winter accessories.

Layering

Layering has become more of a mainstream trend, not necessarily deriving from runway. Moreover, many influencers have adopted this as a part of the more modern eclectic style. This look is by far one of my favorites and looks great on pretty much anyone. Whether it be jackets, shirts, or small bra tops, the layering trend has no limit. Look to fashion influencers, Gen Zers, and content creators in order to gain inspiration for this trend!
