The Ultimate Guide: Maison Margiela Tabi Dupes

As one of the most polarizing shoe silhouettes of all time, Tabis caused a huge stir in the fashion community in 2023. However, they still managed to acquire a cult-like following. Although you might not be down with hooves for shoes * horse-chic *, the rich history behind them may sway your opinion. The actual shoe’s origins began in 1988 during Maison Margiela’s debut in Paris, France. His ideas had been inspired by his latest trip to Japan, where he designed the Tabi. The shoes’ silhouette actually trace back as far as the 25th century and derive from Japanese work shoes. Funnily enough, when it came time to bring his designs to life, Margiela had a very difficult time finding a cobbler. It was said that his split-toe designs were too radical for the traditional workshops. Nonetheless, he eventually found a cobbler that was brave enough to think outside the box and those designs were debuted at his first show in ‘88. Although Margiela did not invent these glorified hooves, he did revolutionize the industry by mastering the deconstruction of old and used ideas and turning them into something extraordinary.

Many people across social media have chimed in to give their 2 cents about these weirdly interesting shoes. The consensus being, within the fashion community, that they cannot help but like the Tabi’s. I guess it’s similar to a car crash you can’t look away from.

Anyways, if you actually just want to see the dupes instead of a boring history lesson, here’s your links. xx
