Fall/Winter 2023 Fashion Trends Rundown

…its been a while. But do not fear! I’m back to give you the rundown for this seasons fashion trends. This year’s fashion has really grasped the quintessential 90’s/2000’s styles that we saw in years past that weren’t ideally executed (i.e. bright colors, tacky jewelry, extreme y2k prints, and we cant forget the low rise jean, crop top combo). If this year’s fashion could be described in a few words it would be individualism meets 90’s red carpet Kate Moss. The eccentricity of ones wardrobe is in now more than ever before. It began last year with the huge rise in thrifting. Shopping second hand has become one of the ways to achieve a closet that is unique to you. On social media, influencers will vlog (video blog) their shopping trip to their local thrift stores and be able to share their tips and tricks on how to find the best, most unique pieces for a low price. The hashtag “thrift” has over 13.6 billion views on TikTok and over 1.3 million posts using the hashtag. Essentially, a majority of the fashion community has decided to boycott (unintentionally or intentionally) shopping at regular box stores and only shop second hand. This change will most certainly affect the industry by creating less annual landfill waste.

With that being said, let’s dive into the actual trends,

Colors & Fabrics

Like most fall/winter seasons, there will be leather, fur coats, and boots. In true 90’s fashion, the color palette consists of muted colors, neutrals, and various shades of red. We will be seeing lots of cream colors, beige, browns, grey, and black. There has been a return of patterns and fabrics from last year, however they are more tasteful and chic this time around. This includes polka dots, plaid, satin, animal prints, lace, and furs. Think Dolce and Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood 90’s aesthetic.

Style Influences

The obvious overarching style influence is the 90’s and early 2000’s sleek styles mixed with contrasting prints and fabrics. The rising grunge and punk styles were inevitably mixed with the model-off-duty minimalist silhouettes/basics. An example of the modern sleek 90’s styles & silhouettes is Paloma Wool. This years fashion is very influenced by music. We’re seeing lots of 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s styles trickling in with accessories, aesthetics, and even makeup trends.

Silhouettes

The trending silhouettes we will be seeing this fall/winter are off the shoulder sweaters and tops, one shoulder tops, fitted and full sized tops (see ya later crop tops) and low rise pants. Corset tops will still be in, but will probably be seen being layered for the cooler weather. Paloma Wool pulls this trend together perfectly with the muted colors and neutrals.

Specific Trends

Trends we’ve seen this year that will be popular this season include flower appliques, lace clothing, red tights, fur coats, over the knee boots, large belts and mary janes. The classic leather moto boots are still in for this fall/winter as well as luxurious furs (coats, hats, or even boots). I’ve even seen some girls pair their fancy fur coats with casual sweats and tees. A lot of these trends can be super simple and easy to put together. Just throw on some colorful tights to add the perfect accessory to any outfit. Bold accessories are huge this season, like wide chunky belts, flower wrap chokers, knee high socks, ribbon, and bows.
